These traditional glass pitchers are famous throughout Spain although probably the design originated in Cataluña, in place of wine-skins. They are used to store wine so that it will have minimal contact with the outside air -- too much of which could spoil the wine. Yet at the same time the wine is immediately ready to drink. Just pick up the purrón and tilt it so that a thin stream of wine pours directly into your mouth (or a glass!). It takes some skill, but it is fun at a party to see how well you and your friends master the technique and have swallows of sangría! On a more sober note, you can store your sangria or other wine in it, or have it as a decorative piece.
